Components of the Platform
A convening mechanism that brings together all the stakeholders together on a periodic basis to discuss issues of common interest and forge partnerships
A communication dimension that aims at creating awareness for behavioral change needed to make waste recovery systems effective.
A business competition where innovative projects will be awarded seed capital to demonstrate waste recovery in Ghana
A digital platform to connect stakeholders to facilitate waste recovery, which will be equipped with tools such as a waste map, a compendium of technologies, and mobile application for trading of waste;
The expected impact of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform includes:
Provide a space for engaging citizens to Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and thus be part of the circular economy
Facilitate new types of collaborations between and among research institutions, private sector, government and civil society for the development and testing of innovative solutions.
Demonstrate the potential economies of scale for waste recovery businesses whilst meeting social and environmental needs. This could be a basis for scaled up public and private investments in waste recovery.
- Increase investor confidince in the waste/resource recovery sector through the ability to make scientific-based economic decisions and bring in needed resources necessary for scaling-up.
- Create an online market for recycled products and /or export/import of valuable waste streams, thus helping other initiatives to be more viable/scale-up.
- Facilitate stronger connections between the formal and informal sectors through innovative apps but also provides the opportunity for the informal sector to formalize and scale-up.
The Governance Structure of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform defines how the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform and its resources will be managed over time, including both the digital and physical spaces of the Platform. It defines the ownership of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform and expected roles and responsibilities of all partners involved. Ownership in this context defines the scope of role of each member of the Platform, the level of influence it possesses on decision making and its attendant expected responsibilities.
The ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform shall be made of the following categories:
- All Members: Membership of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform is open to all individuals and organizations with interests in promoting efficient waste management and resource recovery in Ghana. Their continuous participation and voluntary contribution of technical knowledge and time makes the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform existent and continuously relevant. There will be two main mechanisms for Platform Members to submit advice for sustained relevancy and ease of use of the Platform: the digital space of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform and regular in-person meetings to discuss, to receive direct and open-ended feedback.
- Steering Board: Its role is to provide leadership at a strategic level, by ensuring organizational buy-in, commitment from member agencies, continuous availability of requisite resources, external influence and oversight of the “Waste” Recovery Platform and potentially other initiatives that could be reconducted under the Platform. The Board will have representatives (chosen by Platform members) from government, private sector, civil society, academia and development partners to reflect the multi-stakeholder nature of the Platform.
- Advisory Group: this is made of the Technical Working Groups which will be spaces for members of the Platform to undertake in-depth discussion on specific issues related to the performance and continued relevancy of the Platform.
- Management Team: it is the operational unit of the Platform, in charge of the daily activities of the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform. It serves as the bridge/medium for information sharing between and among the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform members, the Technical Working Groups and the Steering Board.
At the inception meeting for the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform, a co-designing approach was adopted by the stakeholders after which 5 technical working groups were formed to discuss the design, operation and management of the platform, with technical support from UNDP. Below are the 5 working groups, the scope of their work and members who participated throughout the co-designing process. Once the Platform is formally established, these groups will continue to undertake in-depth discussion on specific issues related to the performance and continued relevancy of the Platform. The number and typology of groups can vary based on new developments and emerging opportunities.
- The Data and Policy: They defined the parameters for the methodology for data collection, responsibilities, and other key data issues related to the development of the platform and its tools.
- The National Competition: They discussed and made recommendation on the process to be followed in selecting the Wieners of the Waste Recovery Innovation Challenge.
- The Communication and Awareness: They identified target groups and strategies for communicating about the Platform and raising awareness on efficient waste management and opportunities for waste recovery in Ghana.
- The Sustainability and Financing: They proposed a governance structure for the platform (Operational Board and Advisory Board) and shared some ideas on how to deal with various sustainability factors (finance, market, eco-factors, M&E).
